Supernatural lore is part of many Asian cultures. In these cultures, the belief that spirits, ghosts and demons are periodically released from the underworld to roam the earth has inspired the creation of works of dance, literature, costume, art, food, alcohol, music and sound as offerings to appease the spirits during their time on earth.
Inspired by this belief and its practices, Book From Hell is a music collaboration by three renowned Asian composers and musicians - Zai Kuning, Dickson Dee and Otomo Yoshihide – each of whom brings his own cultural and personal understanding of this belief to this composition which combines electronic and acoustic music with vocals and video work.
The three collaborators are known for their own distinctive yet always evolving styles of music, and have worked extensively in their own countries and internationally. Zai’s styles range from extreme noise, ritual chants and electronic to acoustic compositions. Dickson has worked with industrial noise, experimental electronic, avant-garde, cut ‘n’ paste and new classical. Otomo has journeyed through rock, jazz, free jazz, free improvisation, avant-garde, minimalist electronic, turntablism, film soundtrack and more.
